BEST Mattress for Back, Hip, & Shoulders

I’ve decided to tackle a biggie today. I get more emails about which is the best mattress for back, hip, & shoulders than almost anything else. This makes since considering these areas can take quite a bit of abuse if not paired with the proper sleep surface. I have consulted with a Myoskeletal Alignment Therapist friend of mine to get a better understanding of what might work best for this specific set of issues. Here is a quick overview of what he recommends.

BACK

It is important to get a core that is supportive and offers a decent level of contour. The back is not straight so your mattress needs to form fit to the natural curve of the spine while holding it in a neutral alignment. Here is an example common mattress components that will provide this for you.

• Individually Wrapped or pocketed coils.
• Pre compressed foam core (Preferably soy based)
• Wrapped Coils with center or posturized zone in the middle for more back support.

HIP

Just like our spine our hips need a contouring surface to keep from excess pressure build up. Pressure on the shoulders cause a two fold issue. 1) You may experience pain directly on the hip due to pressure points. 2) Excess pressure may cause the alignment for the spine to slip from that neutral position we are looking for. Common materials that offer better pressure relief include:

• Open Cell Memory Foam
• Gel layers (Same concept as the Gel insert used in foot wear)
• Soy Based Bio Foam
• Natural or Organic Latex
• Water Based Foam
• Compressed Wool & Cotton

SHOULDERS

The Shoulders need essentially the same kind of pressure relief as the hip region. The materials used to achieve this are the same as the materials used to alleviate pressure on the hips. See the list above.
